How Cricktlegs came about

We have one of the most beautiful lakes on the east coast here in South Carolina, Lake Jocassee. No doubt in my mind that this lake holds some of the largest fish in the world. The main species of fish in this lake include bass, small mouth bass, yellow perch, rainbow and brown trout. I should also mention that it holds brook trout as well and our version of the grand slam is catching all three types of trout in one day.

I have been fishing this lake for many years and it still amazes me how awesome of a fishery it is but how difficult the fishing can be on this lake, especially for the trout. But the big note here is the time of the year most of the anglers fish this lake. “Our season” starts in November and goes through May, the coldest part of the year and sometime the most productive for the rainbow and brown trout. That being said, lets get to the point of Cricket Legs.

Of course during the years of fishing this lake, I have met some of my closest friends. As all fishermen know, it doesn’t matter how close we are with these guys, keeping your favorite lure under wraps is always a challenge. Especially after a good tournament with you carrying the money and trophy back to the house. So one day someone asks me “what did you catch that nice trout on?” I replied “brown cricket legs.” My fishing partner and friend for life says; “no it was the black cricket legs that caught that trout.” After a few laughs go by and maybe someone getting ticked off a little, cricket legs became the normal lie and everyone lived happily ever after, until the next tournament.
