Striper Fishing Techniques
Fished for striped bass on Lake Hartwell early this month with live bait. This post is to talk about the striper fishing techniques used to catch more stripers when using live bait. In the state of South Carolina we use 2 or 3 types of baits to fish with. Blue back herring, thread fin shad, minnows, or rainbow trout are the ones available to the local fisherman. Most common bait though would be the blue back herring. Based on my experiences, the 2 most important pieces of fishing equipment a man needs is a good sonar and a trolling motor. Of course others items are important such as the bait tank, bait saver for the herring, tough rod and reels, and plenty of hooks, swivels, and leader line.
I talk about the sonar and trolling motor because boat positioning is everything to help your striper fishing techniques. Once these fish decide to eat, they heard, drive and devour the herring. This can happen in an area smaller then the size of your boat. Locating these fish on the sonar and being able to stay on the spot to get the bait down in time is the key. Even when the wind is blowing, the fish do not know this when sitting on the bottom feeding. That is why when you go on a good charter, no matter if you are fishing for bass, stripers, crappie, sturgeon, or saltwater fishing, the captain knows his boat positioning. And to make things even more challenging, handling your current vessel or some one else’s, are factors that can change and make the learning experience be more difficult. The best way to get good at this is to be on the water.
Locating these stripers on our graph looks like spaghetti noodles jumping on top of each other. Trust me when I say this, tree and bottom structure is very common on our lakes in SC. When the spaghetti is on the bottom, there is a difference from what the bottom structure look like. The spot we fished was about 40ft in diameter, wind blowing about 5-10moh, anchored boat on the best spot. Welcome to striper fishing, there is always on the good spot. Must of done his homework a little earlier then us. When we set our lines out, we had multiple hookups with in minutes. I caught 4 hybrids with in minutes and my fishing partner was getting hung up on the trees. As I can figure, the boat was being blown back every time we got on the spot and I was on the safe side. There for about 45 minutes, we could not keep a bait in the water. Not sure how many fish we caught, but our striper fishing techniques could improve as well. Something we do on the way home is talk about what happened on the water. This lets us get away from the action and reflect on what happened. We are always looking to improve on our striper fishing techniques, or any other fishing for that matter.
